Projection of sustainability indicators, emissions and improvement potential of the energy drivers in the Nigerian transport sector based on exergy procedure
(2022) Abam FI; Inah OI; Effiom SO; Ntunde DI; Ugwu HU; Ndukwu MC; Samuel OD
The exergetic sustainability, emissions pattern and improvement potential of the Nigerian transport sector (NTPS) is presented. The historical and projected energy consumption from 1988 to 2019 and 2020–2040 were considered. The regression analysis was used to project the future energy consumption. The polynomials were developed using the engineering equation solver (EES). The sector's maximum overall energy and exergy efficiencies were estimated at 21.60 % and 21.40 %, respectively. The environmental indicators: waste exergy ratio (WER), environmental effect factor (EEF) and exergoenvironmental impact index (EPI) ranged between 0.72 ≤ WER ≤ 0.85, 2.57 ≤ EEF ≤ 5.67, and 0.51 ≤ EPI ≤ 0.83, respectively. The CO2 emission was calculated at 0.717 Mt while SO2, NOx and CO occurred at 0.178 Mt, 0.359 Mt and 0.089 Mt, respectively. CO2 and SO2 are the highest emitted gases, and the road subsector dominates in the emissions profile. The subsectors energy consumption was projected from 2020 to 2040. The results revealed that the emissions and other performance indicators possess a skyward trend during the projected period. From the results, suggestions were made for future sustainable transport pathways in the NTPS.
